THE FIRST GOODBYE

 EDITION 1

Last Tuesday evening was spent sorting hundreds of freeze dried meals into a 52 day menu, representing 10 months of us painstakingly making all our own meals. We were meticulous in making sure neither of us are having too many pastas or curries etc in one day. Then, combined with 130 snack packs brimming with biscuits, crisps and chocolate bars, stacked it all up ready to get driven across to Burnham-on-Crouch in the morning.

The drive to Burnham, where the boat was stored, was one we had both done many times over our ocean rowing careers, with a quick detour to visit John to collect our shiny new Croker oars - certainly the best in class for ocean rowing! With over half a million calories and our only means of propulsion for 65 days sliding around in the back, we navigated the winding roads through the Essex countryside to find our beloved Pacemaker - the boat we will be living on for our 3000 mile crossing.

Once there we packed her up, every cabin and hatch full with safety equipment, snacks, spares and repairs for every mission critical item until she was bursting at the seams. We cleaned up her wrap, ready for the final touches that the team from Worlds Toughest Row will add in La Gomera, made any last minute repairs and adjustments, we even sorted out our new para anchor lines courtesy of English Braids!

At last it was finally time to say our first goodbye of the row this year, thankfully only temporarily until we are reunited at the start line in San Sebastian de La Gomera, a stunning, craggy volcanic island that will make up the backdrop of the exhilarating first few days at sea.
